Organization - Creating habits and taming the clutter

A New Year ususally means new goals, new resolutions and new starts. But organization doesn’t have to start in January, nor does it need to consume your life. Once you have a few things in place, creating habits are what will make all your hard work a success. The key is to start small and in one room, or even one area of a room, at a time. If you try to do too much too quickly, you will become overwhelmed and quit, leaving you feeling defeated and even more frustrated. Below I have broken down a few tips for getting started on your organizational journey. Remember to take your time and be realistic about what you are wanting to accomplish. Your house didn’t get messy in a day, cleaning it up will take some time too.

To get started…

Focus on one space/room at a time - Have a bin nearby for items that belong in another area of your home. Put those items away when you are done with the room

Tackle the space/room in zones - For example, closet, dresser, nightstands, etc. - Don't do it all at once or you will end up getting overwhelmed

Make a list, or don't - If checking off tasks helps to motivate you, then write it down. If seeing your progress is all you need, then pat yourself on the back for a job well done

Give yourself a certain amount of time, or don't - You know yourself well enough to know if you get easily distracted or not. Give yourself a sufficient amount of time to tackle a specific task, and then if it takes longer, celebrate your progress and keep going

When thinking about how to make the best use of your space…

Use vertical space - Utilize the spaces behind doors, inside of cabinets or even the ceiling of a garage to create spaces for more storage.

Use baskets or bins to store like items - Whether it's décor, craft supplies, tools or toys, having a specific container as well as place for your things makes it easier to put away as well as find the next time you want to use the item. This process also creates habits for both adults and children.

Move or pack away off season items - Once you have gone through your items and decided what to get rid of, put out only the items that you will need for the next 2-4 months. If everything must return, make the in season most accessible.
